Contredanse

March 10 from 9am to 1pm: Contredanse Baroque with Annabelle Blanc

The workshop invites you to discover the contradances of the court of England at the time of the Stuarts.

« First couple, set and turn single, cast off, lead down, take both hands, cross over, back to back… » are the expressions used to describe the figures of these collective dances.

Collected by John Playford as early as the 17th century in his multiple editions of « The Dancing Master », they will continue to be in vogue and will be evoked in Jane Austen’s novels.

Favouring conviviality and social relations, the contradances, very appreciated in France, were practiced there until the 19th century to be transformed into quadrilles.
