The Fondation des Etats-Unis is pleased to host the Paris International Saxophone Workshop on Thursday February 16. The masterclass will run from 4pm to 6pm and the concert, open to the public, will take place at 7pm. Featuring repertoire by American composers, this workshop and concert are given with the full support of Vandoren, Yamaha, and Selmer Paris. The concert will include solo and chamber works by Victor Morosco, Mark Mellits, Rodney Bennet, Steven Bryant, Fuminori Tanada, Astor Piazolla, and more. Featuring the Aulnay-sous-Bois saxophone ensemble under the direction of Jérôme Larane.

Guest artists’ biographies

Born in Melbourne, Michael Duke has performed throughout Australia and abroad. He received both Master’s and Doctoral Degrees in Music Performance from Indiana University, studying under the tutelage of renowned classical saxophonists Eugene Rousseau, Thomas Walsh, Jean-Yves Fourmeau and Arno Bornkamp, and also pursued jazz studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Beginning in July 2008, Duke commenced his appointment as the first ever full-time classical saxophone lecturer in Australia at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Sydney University where he served as Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching and Chair of the woodwind department. Duke has three solo recordings on the Cala (“Australian Portrait ») and Saxophone Classics (“Duo Sax » and “Incandescence ») labels. Duke is a Yamaha Australia Performing Artist.

Concert saxophonist, avid chamber musician, and versatile music educator, Alyssa Hoffert has both commissioned new music and performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe. She has been a winner of various competitions and awards, including the prestigious Frank Huntington Beebe Foundation Fellowship and the Cité internationale universitaire de Paris (CIUP) scholarship for post-graduate music studies in Paris. Hoffert is currently the principal saxophonists with the Liberty Wind Symphony, is on faculty with the Maryland Wind Festival, and has taught instrumental music at Notre Dame College and various schools across Ohio. She can be heard alongside grammy-nominated saxophonist, Greg Banaszak, on Music Minus One’s, Romantic Pieces for Alto Saxophone and Piano. Alyssa is a Conn-Selmer artist and performs on Selmer (Paris) mouthpieces and saxophones.

Voted « Classical revelation » in 2004 by ADAMI, Jérôme Laran quickly became one of the most talented saxophonists of his generation, and is regularly a guest artist in the highest educational institutions in Japan, China, Taiwan, the United States, and many other European countries. Laran studied saxophone with Claude Delangle at the Paris Conservatoire and graduated 2002 with the highest honors. His latest solo release « Impressions d’Automne » (Cafua Records, Japan) has received great critical acclaim. Jérôme currently teaches saxophone at the National Conservatoire in Aulnay-sous-Bois and frequently gives masterclasses across Europe and Asia.

Sarah Markham is a highly regarded saxophonist, with a performing, recording and teaching career spanning twenty-five years, including performances throughout Europe, North America, and the Far East. As a staunch advocate for new music, Sarah regularly works with composers of all genres and has been featured in the last seven World Saxophone Congresses. A highly regarded teacher, Sarah is the saxophone tutor at the Royal College of Music junior department, Leeds College of Music and the universities of Huddersfield, Sheffield, York, Hull, and Durham. She was also the saxophone consultant at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and regularly conducts masterclasses and clinics throughout the UK and beyond.
Sarah is both a Yamaha Performing Artist and a Vandoren Performing Artist.
